Shuttertalk Hampshire

Last week saw the first of my Shutterstock Community Leader workshops in the Southampton area. We were very kindly hosted by A-Space Arts at their Sorting Office venue in Eastleigh.

The free workshop,  Shuttertalk Hampshire,  was an introductory course on the Stock Image market and how your talent can earn for you. With attendance nearly at capacity of 45, and a contribution from Simon Brooksbank, Head of Video Acquisition at Shutterstock, we had a two hour presentation with a lively Questions and Answers session, and our guests left with Shutterstock goodies, kindly provided by Simon from the Shutterstock, London office.

Subjects covered included:

  •   A general overview of how the Stock Image market has evolved
  •   How to become a contributor and the initial submission
  •   Required equipment
  •   Technical requirements, including the need for property and model releases
  •   Royalty Free Licensing
  •   How images are used
  •   Shutterstock Contributor tools and Home Page
  •   Potential Earnings
  •   Current Trends
  •   A brief introduction to contributing Stock Footage

Most attendees were new to the Stock Image market, (although a few were already signed up contributors), which provided a good balance, with existing contributors being able to share experiences with those who were new to the industry.

The intention is to start a local community of contributors, offering a support network intended to help new contributors  through the trials and tribulations of being a Stock contributor!

Feedback so far has been positive, and the next free workshop is likely to take place in May or June. In the meantime, I am here to help with any questions you may have.  Please feel free to post comments and questions on the Blog.

The next event is likely to be a ‘Submission Clinic’, and attendees will be invited to submit questions/images in advance regarding image acceptance issues. On the night, we can look at examples and, hopefully, offer tips and critiques to help improve image acceptance rates.
